Dear IT friends,

Upcoming Summer IT Events on IT Manpower and Web Accessibility

Thanks for your support for the two recent events hosted by my office -- seminars on "Opportunities for Hong Kong IT Industries in Qianhai" and "Trade Descriptions (Unfair Trade Practices) (Amendment) Ordinance 2012." Both were well received, and the latter event was attended by almost 400 people. Clearly there are concerns from both the telecommunications and marketing sectors about the amended TDO. The impact remains to be seen, but companies should be reminded to base their claims with evidence, and reasonably.

Next, I would like to draw your attention to two more events this summer. First, I will co-host an event on August 21 with the Hong Kong Blind Union, Internet Society Hong Kong, and the IT Resources Centre of the HKCSS, on "Ensuring Full Web Accessibility Compliance," (in Cantonese) which will aim at helping those in the social welfare sector understand the requirements of web accessibility design, and how to choose a suitable web design vendor. Friends in web development may also be interested to join, and please click here for more details.

Finally, we must all have noticed the widening gap between IT manpower supply and demand in recent years, and the warning signals to the sustainability of the ICT sector, in face of substantial needs from data center build-outs, cloud computing, information security and so on. The shortfall in IT talents is clear, but what are the desired infrastructure for training and professional qualification that will be needed to attract more students and young people to enter the field. My office is working with many ICT associations to jointly host a seminar on "Development of IT Manpower in Hong Kong" (in Cantonese) on August 23. OGCIO, academic and industry experts will share their ideas, and we look forward to turning these insights into actions. It's free and please join!
