Dear IT friends, Condemn Massive Cyber Attacks; Vote on 22 JuneOver the past few days, the e-voting platform developed by HKU POP for 6.22 Civil Referendum were under severe DDoS attack of an unprecedented scale. I know that a group of network and infosec experts are working diligently to counter the attacks. Since late May, DDoS attacks hit HKU servers and HKIRC which administers the ‘.hk’ domain have seen irregular traffic in its servers, according to media reports. Today, the website of Next Media was down due to massive traffic. The attacks are clearly escalating. These attacks are systematic and intentional, and most of them target the pan-democratic camp and Occupy Central. As if smearing campaign in the media is not enough, it is shameful that technology is now used to thwart our civil society. I have set up a Facebook page to gather cases of cyber-attacks and condemn those behind them. Please like and share the page, as we urge the police’s Technology Crime Division to investigate. Hong Kong people will not be deterred by cyber-attacks. The Civil Referendum will be extended to 29 June. Please spread the word and ask your friends and family to vote in one of the polling stations! We stand firm for universal suffrage and freedom, and shall not be intimidated. Again, I invite you to join us on Thursday night (19 June) 7:30pm at the Workshop on Constitutional Reform (in Cantonese) for a dialogue with Hon Ronny Tong, Mrs Anson Chan, Prof. Joseph Cheng, Dr. Brian Fong and Ms. Agnes Chow of Scholarism on the way forward and what lies ahead for democracy movement. Look forward to seeing you. (Please register online)
