Dear IT friends,
Uphold non-Violence Principle; Please Support Signature Drive to Urge for dialogue
It's been almost two weeks since the start of the Occupation Movement. Its participants have endured eighty-seven tear-gas shells, plus pepper spray, batons, gangster violence and verbal abuse. Hong Kong people are worried, sad and angry, as we witness unprecedented polarisation in society.
The first LegCo meeting this year was supposed to be held this Wednesday, and I had on the agenda one oral question on legal issues regarding constitutional reform, and another amendment to a member’s motion. There was also an important adjournment motion to debate the use of violence against protesters. But pro-establishment suddenly cited "security concerns" and forced the meeting to be postponed, thus evading their legislative responsibility.
But I have stayed in my office in Admiralty almost day and night, since the night of September 26 -- witnessing the protesters were caring for each other, and the respect they showed for people of different opinions. No matter what one's view on the Occupation Movement may be, one may still agree with what famous comedian Dayo Wong said, that the protest has showed the world the courage, peaceful and kind nature of the Hong Kong people.
In order to resolve this crisis, I and other pan-democrats have been facilitating communications between the government and students, including calling for the Chief Secretary for Administration to enter into a dialogue with the students when we met on October 2. The first meeting between the students and the Chief Secretary was to be held today, but suddenly last night the government suspended the meeting, causing much disappointment to the citizens. What is certain is that if the government does not face up to the people's demand for true democracy, Hong Kong cannot move forward.
Today, IT Voice and I has initiated a signature campaign to call for the government, students and others in the community to engage in a dialogue through mutual trust, communications and concrete actions, in order to realise genuine universal suffrage and democracy by abiding to the principle of peaceful non-violence. For our IT friends, please sign before 2pm on October 12 (Sunday) to urge the government to restart the dialogue, for a better tomorrow for Hong Kong!
