Uber

1. Uber

Dear friends,

Uber crackdown reveals inhibitions to innovation
Survey and gathering for IT workers

Coming back from my U.S. trip, I was disappointed to find the arrests of Uber drivers and employees, showing the kind of bureaucratic attitude by our government departments towards innovation and technology practitioners.

1. From Uber crackdown to policy implications
The heated discussions around the Uber crackdown has arisen from Hong Kong citizens' widespread dissatisfaction with our taxi services and hope for more choices. In my HKEJ articles last week and this week, I addressed the issues about the causes of the lack of the right environment to attract talents to base their innovative development in Hong Kong, and the outdated nature of many of our laws and regulations in today's Internet technology age. Instead taking a conservative attitude that is often seen as protecting vested interests, our government should embrace innovation and open market competition, to create more choices for citizens. I will continue to work with the industry to facilitate more competition and development.

2. Online survey on working conditions of technology workers
My office is conducting a survey on the career and work conditions of IT workers, to understand the working life of fellow IT workers, and collect your opinion on IT development and prospects. The survey will only take 10 minutes to complete. Your view is important to my work in LegCo, please spread the word! Deadline for completion will be 20 September (http://bit.ly/ITworkersurvey)

3. Next i-Tea Gathering
Summer recess is a good time to connect. We are organising our next i-Tea Gathering in September before LegCo reconvenes. I will share my recent work and listen to your views. As always, you can expect an evening of stimulating discussions over snacks and drinks, so please come join us. Details:

Date: 1 September 2015
Time: 7-9 p.m.
Venue: THINK Cafe (Near exit C, Causeway Bay MTR Station)
(Free of charge with refreshments, please register to secure your place)
